Best Ice Bath & Cold Plunge in Europe 2026: Has Anyone Actually Tested Them?
No independent body has tested ice baths. What a real test should check, and how the Rhone ice bath performs, with numbers from our own tests.

Maurice Ettlinger

We checked whether anyone has independently tested ice baths. The answer: Which?, Stiftung Warentest, ÖKO-TEST, Konsument and K-Tipp had not tested a single one as of November 2026. Here is what a real test should check, and how the Rhone ice bath performs.
Last reviewed: November 2026
Quick Answer
- No independent ice bath test exists. No consumer testing organisation in the UK or German-speaking Europe has run a measured ice bath test.
- A good test checks more than temperature: insulation, cooling, running cost, noise, weight, entry, materials, water quality and winter use.
- Insulation: in 24 hours without a chiller, an inflatable tub warmed by 10.2 °C, the Rhone ice bath by only 1.4 °C (video).*
- Cooling: in our field test, the Chiller Pro cooled 250 litres from 20 to 10 °C in 1 h 26 min, using 1.41 kWh.
Has anyone tested the best ice bath?
No. No consumer organisation in the UK or German-speaking Europe had run a measured test of ice baths, cold plunge tubs or chiller systems as of November 2026. Which? says so plainly in its January 2026 buying guide: "Please note that we have not tested any of these products."
Who hands out the "best ice bath" labels, then?
Mostly sites that earn from your purchase. Google's first page for "best ice bath uk" is mostly shops ranking the tubs they sell, plus magazine roundups. In the roundups we read, "tested" meant someone used the tub; nobody measured the water temperature. Comparison sites earn a commission through affiliate links and copy the manufacturer's specs.
What should a real ice bath test check?
A good test checks everything that matters in daily use, and measures under the same conditions. The table shows the checks, how the Rhone ice bath performs and how a typical ice bath performs. The evidence follows below.
| Check | Rhone ice bath | Typical ice bath |
|---|---|---|
| Insulation: warming in 24 hours without a chiller, starting at 3 °C | 1.4 °C* | 10.2 °C (inflatable tub)* |
| Cooling from 20 to 10 °C | 1 h 26 min with the Chiller Pro, 250 litres; the same chiller cools about 15 % faster in Rhone* | slower, because more heat gets in* |
| Electricity per year to hold temperature | around €27* | around €400* |
| Ice | none, the chiller holds the temperature | without a chiller, for every session, €5 to €15 |
| Noise in daily use | Chiller Pro 60 to 65 dB while cooling, but it only runs briefly each day | the same chiller has to run much longer* |
| Weight and space | 37 kg empty and about 267 kg in use, spread over 117 × 78 cm. Fits through 80 cm doors and is no problem for most balconies | varies widely by model, often over 400 kg when filled, which calls for a structural engineer |
| Entry and safety | ground level, no steps or ladder, non-slip floor | depends on the model, safe entry is often not considered in the design |
| Materials and durability | rotomoulded polyethylene with insulation foam, UV-resistant, made in the EU, 2-year warranty | inflatable tubs can tear or start leaking after a short time |
| Water quality | tight-closing lid; Chiller Pro and Chiller Core with ozone and 20-micron filtration | without filtration and a good lid, the water often needs changing every few days |
| Winter | chillers usable in winter, unique winter programme in the Theralpine app | usually problematic |
How well does Rhone insulate compared with an inflatable tub?
We cooled the Rhone ice bath and an inflatable tub with the same amount of water to 3 °C and left both for a day under the same conditions, without a chiller. After 24 hours the water in the inflatable tub had warmed by 10.2 °C (to 13.2 °C), in the Rhone ice bath by only 1.4 °C (to 4.4 °C).*
Video (German): The ultimate ice bath test, Theralpine on YouTube.
In our longer measurement series, the Rhone ice bath warms by about 0.07 °C per hour on average, a typical ice bath by up to 1.1 °C. The water stays cold up to 16× longer, and the chiller rarely needs to top up the cold.*
How fast does the Chiller Pro cool in the field test?
In our field test, we cooled 250 litres of water in the Rhone ice bath from 30 to 0 °C at about 26 °C room temperature and logged temperature and power every minute. From 20 to 10 °C the Chiller Pro took 1 h 26 min and 1.41 kWh. At the Ofgem price cap average of 26.32p per kWh (Direct Debit, Great Britain, October to December 2026), that is about 37p (1.41 × 26.32p). The full cool-down from 30 to 0 °C took 4 h 36 min and 4.43 kWh.

How much electricity does an ice bath with a chiller cost per year?
Once the water is cold, the chiller only has to remove the heat that gets in through the tub. How much that is depends on the insulation. This is the calculation, with 250 litres of water and €0.30 per kWh:
| Step | Rhone ice bath | Typical ice bath |
|---|---|---|
| Warming per hour | about 0.07 °C* | up to 1.1 °C* |
| Heat the chiller has to remove each day | about 0.49 kWh (1.7 °C a day) | about 16× as much |
| Electricity per day (COP about 2) | about 0.24 kWh | about 3.5 to 4 kWh |
| Electricity per year | about 89 kWh | about 1,300 to 1,460 kWh |
| Cost per year at €0.30 per kWh | around €27* | around €400* |
At the GB price cap average of 26.32p per kWh, 89 kWh a year comes to about £23 (89 × 26.32p). The full calculation, including the cool-down after filling, is in our guide to ice bath running costs.
FAQ
Has Which? tested ice baths?
No. Which? published an ice bath buying guide in January 2026 and states in it that it has not tested any of the products. Stiftung Warentest, ÖKO-TEST, Konsument and K-Tipp have not tested ice baths either.
How can I check an ice bath's insulation myself?
Cool the water to your usual temperature, switch the chiller off and close the lid. Measure the water temperature with a digital thermometer that shows 0.1 °C, then again after 24 hours. The smaller the rise, the better the insulation.
Which ice bath is best for a balcony?
On a balcony, weight, footprint and door width count. The Rhone ice bath weighs 37 kg empty and about 267 kg in use, with 230 litres of water and a person inside. It stands on 117 × 78 cm and fits through 80 cm doors. More in our guide to an ice bath for apartments and balconies.
Bottom Line
No independent ice bath test winner exists. Rely on measurements and on the points that matter in daily use: insulation, running cost, weight, entry, materials and water quality. In 24 hours without a chiller, the Rhone ice bath warmed by 1.4 °C, an inflatable tub by 10.2 °C.*
For a few sessions a year, a simple tub with ice is enough. If you plunge three to four times a week, you need water that stays cold and clean without effort. That is what we built the Rhone ice bath for: the insulation holds the cold, the chiller barely has to work, and you get in whenever you have time.
You can get the Rhone ice bath on its own or as a set with the Chiller Lite, Chiller Core or Chiller Pro. Every buying criterion in detail is in our ice bath buyer's guide.
Explore the Rhone ice bath and the matching chillers on the ice bath with chiller page. You get 14-day returns and a 2-year warranty.

How Does a Water Chiller for Ice Baths Work? The Technology Explained Simply
A water chiller for ice baths works essentially like a refrigerator. It pumps water from your tub, removes the heat through a refrigerant loop, releases it into the air, and returns the cooled water. Here is how the technology actually works, and what matters when you buy one.
